The lines of the story of Mercury and the Woodman
- of a deep pool in the forest. It was late in the day
- and the Woodman was tired. The axe slipped and flew
- out of his hands into the pool. The Woodman was in
- despair. The axe was all he had to make a living
- and he had no money to buy a new one. As he stood
- weeping, the god Mercury suddenly appeared and asked
- what the trouble was. He told him what had happened,
- and so Mercury dived into the pool. He emerged with a
- golden axe. "Is this your axe?" "No," said the woodman.
- Mercury sprang back into the pool. This time he emerged
- with a silver axe. Again the Woodman said it was not his.
- Mercury dived again and emerged with the axe that
- had been lost. The Woodman was so glad, he could not
- thank Mercury enough. Mercury was so pleased with the
- Woodman's honesty that he gave him all the three axes.
