compass [comprehension quiz] [tooltips over pictures]
Deep inside our planet is a super-hot, liquid core made mostly of iron.
As the Earth spins, this liquid metal moves around, which creates a powerful magnetic field that surrounds the entire planet. That same magnetic field also protects us.
Just like a bar magnet you might play with, the Earth's magnetic field has a North Pole and a South Pole.
The needle in a compass is also a magnet, usually made of iron, and one end is attracted to the Earth's magnetic North Pole.
The other end of the needle points south. The end that points north is often colored red to make it easy to see.
The needle is balanced on a tiny, smooth pivot or floating in liquid, which allows it to spin freely and find its direction
The most important thing to remember is that the compass needle always points north.
Once you know which way is north, you can find the other directions (south, east, and west) based on the "compass rose" printed on the compass.
Just be careful to keep your compass away from other magnets. Things like smartphones can mess up the compass and cause the needle to point the wrong way.
