The lines of the story of Mercury and the Woodman

  • of a deep pool in the forest. It was late in the day
  • and the Woodman was tired. The axe slipped and flew
  • out of his hands into the pool. The Woodman was in
  • despair. The axe was all he had to make a living
  • and he had no money to buy a new one. As he stood
  • weeping, the god Mercury suddenly appeared and asked
  • what the trouble was. He told him what had happened,
  • and so Mercury dived into the pool. He emerged with a
  • golden axe. "Is this your axe?" "No," said the woodman.
  • Mercury sprang back into the pool. This time he emerged
  • with a silver axe. Again the Woodman said it was not his.
  • Mercury dived again and emerged with the axe that
  • had been lost. The Woodman was so glad, he could not
  • thank Mercury enough. Mercury was so pleased with the
  • Woodman's honesty that he gave him all the three axes.
