This activity is all about rainfall in the UK.

The different types of rainfall, what causes it and why it is so unpredictable.
On average, it rains for 156 days each year in the UK.

Rain is classified according to how it is created.

There are three main types of rainfall.
The first type of rain is called frontal rain.

It occurs where warm tropical air meets cold polar air as shown in this picture.


When these two large air masses meet, the warm less dense air, slides up over the cold dense air, creating the 'front'.

As a result, the warm, less dense air cools and the water vapour condenses into water and falls as raindrops.

Fronts are large scale weather systems, being hundreds, and possibly thousands of miles long, as seen here marked in blue.
