The food we eat is chewed and swallowed

It is diverted towards the stomach by the pharynx at the back of the throat.

A series of muscles squeeze together and push the food down a tube called the esophagus.

When the food gets to the stomach a valve closes to stop the food from escaping.

Anything useful from the food is absorbed through the stomach wall.

The small intestine shown here, is the length of a tennis court.
